Rear Admiral Ron J. MacLaren
Rear Admiral Ron J. MacLaren, was born in Seoul, Korea, and grew up in Mexico, Peru and the Panama Canal Zone. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1979 and was commissioned an Ensign in the Supply Corps through the ROTC program. He completed his Masters in Business Administration at Auburn University, Montgomery in August 1992. During his initial period of service, his assignments aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65) included Assistant Stock Control Officer, Wardroom Officer and Sales Officer. His sea-tour was followed by duty as Material Officer, Supervisor of Shipbuilding Conversion and Repair in Jacksonville, Fla. MacLaren transitioned to the Reserve Component in 1983. Since then he has served as Commodore, Navy Cargo Handling and Port Group 3; Commander, Navy Supply Support Battalion 2; Commanding Officer, Naval Operational Logistics Support Center HQ; Commanding Officer, Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 12; Commanding Officer, Naval Supply Center Pensacola 109; Chief of Staff, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Force; Deputy Director, United States Pacific Command Deployment and Distribution Operations Center; Deputy Director of Logistics, United States Joint Forces Command 206; Officer in Charge, Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 12, Detachment Alpha 109 and Executive Officer of Naval Supply Center Pensacola 109. His staff assignments have included tours as Readiness Department head, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Force 109; Logistics Response Cell Watch Chief, United States Atlantic Command 206; Operations Officer, Advanced Based Functional Component Supply Support Unit (Medium) 209; Code 07A/Internal Review, Readiness Command Region 10; Supply Officer, Volunteer Training Unit 901 and Training Officer/Supply Officer, USS Talbot (FFG 4) 409. He was mobilized as the Group Commander of Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group FORWARD GOLF in 2007-2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. MacLaren was promoted to Flag rank in October 2009 and was assigned as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Fleet Supply and Ordnance, U.S. Pacific Fleet in October 2009. He was recalled to active duty to his present position in March 2010. Personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two gold stars), the Navy Commendation Medal (three gold stars), and the Navy Achievement Medal (one gold star). Prior to his activation, MacLaren was the Health Director for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), a federally recognized Indian tribe located on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. He served in this capacity since coming out of retirement in 2006. He was responsible for the planning, budgeting and development of tribal health policy and guidance. He contracted for and administered healthcare services for the tribe. Areas of responsibility included a primary care clinic and Health Promotion/Disease Prevention programs for a tribe of approximately 1500 with the defined service area being the County of Dukes County, Martha’s Vineyard. MacLaren pursued a civilian career in hospital administration where he rose to the position of chief executive officer and retired in 2004. For over twenty six years, he served in a variety of healthcare leadership roles including being the Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Cleveland, Texas; President/Chief Executive Officer of Timberland Medical Group, a 501(a) Physician Organization, Cleveland, Texas; Chief Executive Officer of Select Specialty Hospitals – Houston, Texas and as President/Chief Executive Officer of Montgomery Regional Medical Center, Montgomery, Alabama. He has served as Chief Operating Officer of East Montgomery Medical Center, Montgomery, Alabama and as the Director of Materials Management at Humana Hospital – Montgomery and Humana Hospital – Enterprise. He is well versed in managed care, health delivery systems and the different services within the continuum of care. He has had direct operational responsibility over a home health agency of over 100,000 visits per year, three rural health clinics, seven clinics specializing in orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, ophthalmology, urology, general surgery and cardiology, three cardiac catherization labs and an electrophysiology lab. He planned and developed a four bed sleep lab as well as initiated the development process for the initiation of a Federally Qualified Health Center in rural Texas. He also has served in many volunteer leadership capacities. He is a founder and past Chairman of the Martha’s Vineyard Medical Reserve Corps. He is active with the Martha’s Vineyard Continuum of Care Committee as well as a member of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Coalition, Region 5B and the Island’s Health Agents Roundtable. He has served on the Executive Board of the Cleveland, Texas Chamber of Commerce. He led the successful effort to bring post-secondary education to rural Texas. He actively participated to raise funds for the creation of a YMCA program for the families of the residents of Liberty County, Texas. In addition, he conducted numerous presentations to civic groups as well as the city council for the express purpose of educating lay people on the issue of indigent care and the long term costs on the healthcare system if we took no action. He assisted in the development of the first Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) program in Montgomery, Alabama. Provided education and training for sexual assault victims to get compassionate care in a private setting away from the over-crowded Emergency Room as well as providing properly trained nursing staff for collection of evidence to be used in prosecution. Served as a member on the Executive Board of the Dr. William Barnett Medical Foundation. This foundation existed to promote healthcare careers within the area while providing dollars to area students to further their education in this venue. |
